Can I join a home schooling group if I am?

Posted by admin on January 28, 2010
Well, I don’t know what you’d call this but I’m not exactly home schooled more like home tutored by the school. I’ve been out of school on medical leave for Crohn’s disease and can stay out as long as I want because of doctor’s notes. It is just a lot easier for me to do my work at home, at my own pace and not have to worry about the stress of school since stress triggers Crohns. It’s obviously summer now but during the school year a teacher comes over my house for 4 hours a week and gives me work and stuff like that. I was wondering if I could join a home schooling group since I’m so bored during the day but I’m not sure if I qualify as being home schooled?

That completely depends on the homeschool groups. Some will accept you with open arms, other will not.

Check with your local homeschooling group. Some groups are quite welcoming of all homescholers, regardless of method, others are not.

    All the best.

    It depends where you live.

Here, in Australia, no, you can’t. Similarly people who do school online etc can not join homeschooling groups or activities meant for homeschoolers in Aus.

In other countries, maybe, who knows? There is certainly no reason why you should not get in touch with your local group and ask if you can join them.

Well, the groups in your area are really the only ones who could decide whether or not you qualify for membership in their groups, but I think most groups would be happy to have you.

It depends upon the homeschool group, really. Some are casual and informal. For others you have to pay dues up front and they have a lot of bylaws and requirements.

Some are set up only for independent homeschoolers, some are set up only for unschoolers, some will include cyberschoolers and some will not. Some are for special needs kids only; you could probably qualify for one of those, but when your Crohn’s isn’t acting up you’d probably feel out of place.

You will just have to ask the group that you’d like to join and see what they say.
