Finding the Right Course for me.

Posted by admin on April 22, 2010

When I went to University I think I was too young to really understand what I wanted to do in life. I chose to study a mathematics degree but after a year and a half I dropped out, because I just wasn’t motivated enough to do the work required to continue in the course. To be honest I found it so boring it hurt my brain! It took a lot of courage to drop out of that course, and in a way I wish that I had had the foresight to see that, although I had a gift for Mathematics, me and a mathematical degree just didn’t mix well.

After University I had to find work so I trained up with a friend of mine who was working as an electrician. This wasn’t exactly what I had had in mind as a career but it certainly brought in money I desperately needed. It also meant that I could start to save up enough money to start to do some distance courses in some subjects I was actually interested in.

After a year of working I had more than enough money – particularly as the company I was hoping to study through allowed me study from home in a distance learning format. Kaplan had such an enormous range of courses on offer that I really had my pick of anything I fancied. In the end I decided to study for a science based degree which could help to forward and progress my career as an electrician. It’s funny how just a little bit of life experience can show you what you are really interested in! When I started the job I was filled with trepidation, but by now I had a real skill, and one that I wanted to better, and Kaplan allowed me to do that.

The Philosophy of learning

Posted by admin on March 28, 2010

Having taken the usual route through education I found myself, like many people of my age, in the wrong job, and indeed the wrong career by the age of thirty. I took my exams in school, and then decided that I ought further my education by focusing on subjects that I had already excelled in. I chose to undertake a mathematics degree. This was all well and good, and I was fortunate, and hard working enough to come away with a decent degree three years later. This lead me to a career in accountancy which rewarded me well financially. Three years down the line though, and I realised that this career was not fulfilling me mentally. It was a complete drag for me to go into work every day, the weekend’s went by in no time and the week seemed to last forever.

It was my philosophical evaluation of my life that lead me to the subject I perhaps should have studied all along – philosophy! I had always been fascinated by behaviour and had considered both anthropology and psychology as courses back at college – but it was only now that I saw my true educational calling.

I knew that I had to take action for the sake of my soul! I started investigating Philosophy degrees online. It turned out that there was all sorts of courses available for me to do as distance learning. It’s funny – I had only been looking for a day or two when I came across the perfect Online philosophy degree. It meant that I could still continue my accountancy job to bring the money in for my rent, but I was able to study from home.

I naturally jumped at the chance. I’m not going to pretend that it was easy, but choosing to undertake that online degree is the best thing that has ever happened to me.

Can I join a home schooling group if I am?

Posted by admin on January 28, 2010
Well, I don’t know what you’d call this but I’m not exactly home schooled more like home tutored by the school. I’ve been out of school on medical leave for Crohn’s disease and can stay out as long as I want because of doctor’s notes. It is just a lot easier for me to do my work at home, at my own pace and not have to worry about the stress of school since stress triggers Crohns. It’s obviously summer now but during the school year a teacher comes over my house for 4 hours a week and gives me work and stuff like that. I was wondering if I could join a home schooling group since I’m so bored during the day but I’m not sure if I qualify as being home schooled?

If I am going to be home tutored/schooled?

Posted by admin on December 28, 2009
…and I pay for a tutor to come out and visit me, say they tutored me in GCSE maths and science so I could get a better GCSE result, how would I be certified for this, as in how would I have a certificate to say I achieved a grade ‘whatever’ for maths and a grade ‘whatever’ for science? Would I need to go back to school, or take a year in college to resit maths and science, or would the tutor give me one, r would they enter me into an exam for it?

I don’t know how it works, but I think I am going to start this soon.
