How do you get students to think for themselves?

Posted by admin on August 12, 2008
I teach in one of the most impoverished parts of the United States. Sometimes it is appalling how similar to a third world country this place is. Unfortunately, the education system is equally as impoverished. I struggle to teach children who are 16 to 18 years old and cannot read and write, let alone add and subtract correctly (I teach high school mathematics). They have been socially promoted over and over again. I have maybe 10 students out of 120 that can read above a third or fourth grade reading level as high school students.

One of my biggest issues is that these children have never been allowed to think. They’ve been taught trick after trick to pass a state test (which they BARELY pass) but they don’t understand what they’re doing. They look constantly for the shortcut around understanding. I am looking for ideas and activities I can use to start to encourage my students to think for themselves instead of depending on me to always give them the answer or the shortcut

Formal Proofs As Seen From the World Of Physics?

Posted by admin on July 4, 2008
Since high school geometry is typically the first time that a student encounters a formal proof, this can obviously present some difficulties. It can also lead kids to think that two-column proof is the only kind of proof there is – yet that form of proof is almost never used by practicing mathematicians.

It could be easier, if children encountered informal ‘proofs’ in earlier school years, and were required to justify their statements and reasoning. This of course would not be on such formal level as it is in high school, but simply a mindset of teaching mathematics where mathematical statements and truths are justified, there are explanations of where things come from, why something works – and the child also is asked to provide explanations and justifications.

What is your view of formal geometric proofs?

Is there a type of engineering that is strictly mathematics?

Posted by admin on June 18, 2008
Is there a type of engineering that is just math, no designing or building?
Or is there another job like the one I’m looking for?
I like algerbra, so I am considering being a math teacher. Simultaneously, teaching doesn’t sound that appealing.

Also, would anyone consider accounting to be a soulless job?

Do you know where I can find the book The Marvelous Garden of Mathematics?

Posted by admin on April 23, 2008
It was apparently written by an Austrian author in German. I know it has been translated to Spanish. I am looking for the English version, if it even exists. It is basically a very thick book that teaches some of the most complex and hard to understand math in the most simplest and entertaining ways.

What kind of career should I pursue?

Posted by admin on March 9, 2008
I’m interested in business, journalism, mathematics, teaching, and something in the creative industry like drama. I have no idea what I want to do when I finish school though; I was thinking journalism but I couldn’t handle writing serious issues I prefer to write fiction stories. I think I would get over teaching fairly quickly- the same with business and mathematics. I’m interested in photography as well but I’m not sure if that could be a potential career. I really want to go to university though, and I’m thinking about doing a degree in writing. How hard is it to become a journalist or a script writer?

Is getting a degree online a good idea?

Posted by admin on February 11, 2008
I am debating getting a teaching credential. Currently I am living in Asia. It would convenient for me to do it online and remain in Asia. I am thinking it would be better to be in the traditional classroom though.

What do you think?

By the way I already have a BA degree.

Also, would you say, the teaching sector is good to be in these days or not? I am considering teaching Mathematics.

Thanks
