English language?
Posted by admin on April 3, 2008How did English language reach America? Were the colonizers like Britain supposed to keep their English to themselves? did they share or teach it to them? Why did the writer of their Constitution used English? Before the colonizers came, the people there already had a language. Why did they chose English?

The colonies were owned by Britain. The govt’s language was English. When people from other countries came to the colonies, they had to learn the English language.

Lots of different questions.
English was “brought” to America by the British.
Not sure what you mean by “keeping English to themselves”…it was the common language of the English colonies so anyone who wanted to function therein had to learn it.
The English did not need to “share” their language since I’m not sure how you would keep a language to yourself. You learn the language that will most beneficial to you.
All the writers of the Constitution (and Declaration of Independence), were, until the American Revolution, Englishmen.
There were many indigenous (native) languages in the Americas before the arrival of the Europeans. Just as the Spanish and Portuguese were the languages of the speakers who conquered Central and South America, English was that of those who conquered North America.
As for “choosing” English (or Spanish or Portuguese), I’m not sure the natives “chose”. English was the language of the conquerers and you learned that language if you wanted to survive.

One would expect that the pomposity of the British kept the colonials from thinking the natives could learn… they would not have hidden their tracks.
But…
