THE BRITISH EMPIRE CONQUERED MANY COUNTRIES A LONG TIME AGO, INCLUDING NORTH AMERICA.
IF SPAIN OR FRANCE WOULD HAVE CONQUERED THE US TERRITORY, THEN WE ALL WOULD SPEAK SPANISH OR FRENCH.

Well at one time the British laid claim to a quarter of the globe. This spread English in places such as India. More recently, the cultural giant that is America has been spreading English with all of its music and movies, as well as business in which speaking the language of your partners is always a bonus.
Some nations, such as Germany and France, are desperately trying to cling to their own language by dubbing movies or by regulating the amount of foreign music which may be played on the radio, but with limited success.

Throughout the written history of man, a nation’s second language of choice has been whomever controlled the greatest portion of the then known world. This was true when it was Rome, Greece, Spain and England sailing the seven seas and insinuated themselves everywhere they went. One needs only to look to history to prove that true.
Thanks to technologic advancement though the world has shrunk its national priorities in such a way that whoever has the greatest media saturation ability now rules the second language competition in the global village. In that respect, we have met the enemy, and he is us. China, who makes more televisions and cell phones than we do, does not broadcast globally on them as much as we do. That, combined with their hard to learn, backwards and upside down, right to left, 2,000 character picture language, confounds and confuses third world countries so they go to the easier to master English language more often than not. Commerce is made easier by doing so.
