How do I get the school system provide a tutor for a homebound student?
Posted by admin on October 16, 2009Our school system says they cannot provide anyone to come to the home to tutor the child. The family is willing to pay anyone either from school or just a private tutor if one can be found.

Most of it depends on why the student is homebound. If the student is homebound for a legitimate reason, the school is required to provide a suitable home program for them. If they will not, and you have a state acceptable medical person who says that the student is unable to attend, you can contact the Office of Civil Rights and they will help you advocate for the proper services.

The school is only allowed to provide a home teacher is you child has a medical condition, diagnosed by a licensed physician, that prevents him/her from attending public school. The district must pay a full teacher salary even if the teacher is only seeing three or four student per day. The cost to the district is excessive and they will never agree unless there is an actual medical need.
