How do you explain your computer skills to an interviewer who does’nt want details?

Posted by admin on April 10, 2008
Yesterday was the first time I was asked about my computer skills and the interviewer did not want to hear the details or give me specifics as to what program or area of computer usage they were referring to she just wanted a one word answer- excellent or good.

Since, she wasn’t interested in my questions regarding this I said excellent and she went on to the next question. Is this the new way of interviewing?

no most people are nervous in an interview, that are more apt to tell the truth. If you had said good she may have wanted you to go into detail.

sounds pretty stupid on the interviewers part. She should have at least asked if you are experienced with the basics – Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc. A one word answer is meaningless. What if she was looking for someone with Apple Mac computer experience and you have only used Windows PC’s ? – she doesn’t even sound qualifued to do basic interviews – if you get another call from them – try to get more info on what computer skills they require and make sure you DO have whay they need – so you aren’t wasting yours or their time

Usually they will ask this if you don’t necessarily need to use the computer and there are several jobs to be filled. If they dispute it later then you can explain that you were talking about basic programs etc and not anything fancy. Don’t worry, if they didn’t go into too much detail, it can’t be too important for the job. Good luck getting it!

maybe she didn’t like you to begin with or the fact that you are excellent is good enough.

they are looking at your personality and how you would fit in.
