how hard is it and how long will it take to learn guitar as an adult?
Posted by admin on June 30, 2008Im totally in love with music, mainly rock and metal. I really want to learn how to play guitar. I’m 24. I tried once when i was 23 and I took lessons from may to december and learned all the strings and one chord. Not much. (my guitar teacher was forgetful and taught me the same things over and over again). I want to try again, and get a dvd or something and teach myself but is it harder for an adult to learn an instrument? How long will it take to get really good if I practice every night?. Also. my super sweet guitar teacher told me that I had fat fingers and that’d make it harder. Although his fingers were about twice the size of mine so that proved to me that its doable even with fat fingers.

How long it will take will depend on many things no one here can answer, but if you practice hard and have any natural talent, you should be able to get some decent sounds going pretty quickly. It takes time for the fingertips to get used to the strings, but within a month you should be able to play a few songs and have some knowledge of the instrument.

I would actually go to a music store or another place that gives lessons and sign up. Then use instructional DVD’s and/or software for your home practice sessions. Guitar can be a frustrating instrument cause you actually have to bend and stretch your fingers in ways they are not supposed to, so it’s not just a matter of knowing how to play a note or chord and doing so, like in other instruments, there are actual physical limitations and yes, the size of your hands/fingers can make a huge difference. another frustrating part of playing guitar is it can actually be painful.
