Math Haters, if someone were to teach you math in a manner you understood, would you take advantage of such?

Posted by admin on January 2, 2009
I’m doing an English paper on the attitudes of people in relation to mathematics, and of course I want to get opinions from all sides of the issue.

So, if those of you that absolutely hate math had the opportunity to learn it in a manner that makes it understandable, would you take that opportunity?
People are not born to hate math, but end up with that attitude because of some influence. In my thesis, I’m arguing on how the way one is taught is the reason for their attitude of dislike/hate.

I am 16 and because of the extremely difficult way the began teaching me Maths last year, I have dropped the class and now have very limited options for the future.

I am years past the likelihood of having that be useful to me, but had it been offered during my school days I would have jumped at the opportunity!

yes! i would love that. when i understand mathematical concepts i am intrigued by them, i don’t mind math at all. but now unfortunately i dont understand anything and i have a teacher that makes absolutely no effort to help. i wish i could understand it. Its to the point where im actually worried about my future.

Everybody understands math, its just a matter of your brain finding it relevant enough to pay attention to. To think that people simply don’t understand is ignorant. It’s a matter of discovering the relevance to everyday life/future aspirations. But once the person passed a crucial developmental stage as a child there is little possibility of being converted from a math hater to a math lover. That’s why you need to reach out early, and not fail future generations like so many thousands of teachers have in the past. They would without a doubt take the opportunity, as long as they haven’t already dismissed the subject completely (due to poor teaching, or just the way they were raised).
