What are some job options for an artist with no computer skills?

Posted by admin on December 19, 2009
My niece is a great artist, but has ADHD and can’t do the whole school thing. She has almost no computer skills and I’m not sure she has the aptitude just yet.

She’s very interested in fashion and interior decorating. It seems like there is a career in there somewhere.

Any ideas? She’s 19.

I’m not great with the computer either….ok, actually i’m hopeless, it’s a miricle i figured this thing out. Anyway, maby she should start by making a reputation, you know? She could design some freinds clothing, or somebody’s house; then whenever someone else notices what she has done they might ask her to do the same for them and then i guess that could lead to her own little buissiness. Of sourse at some point in time i’m sure she’d have to talk to the ‘big ones’ and get permission for her own buissiness. Sorry i can’t offer anything better.

    Create a video blog…instantly.

To get into almost ANY professional level jog in the arts would require SOME level of computer use. And when you specify fashion and interior design, her options are even MORE limited, unless she can be DIRECTLY exposed and showcased to the directors hiring their artists.

Otherwise, the usual channels for artists entering the fields is through the schools, where the computer skills are part of the learning process. And, as you say, she may not be able to do “the whole school thing.”

Still, perhaps, at 19 she is more ready than you think, ESPECIALLY if she is only attending one or two classes at a time. One way to test this is to find an Adult Education program that offers courses in her interests. These are relatively low cost (in case of failure) and you AND her may be able to register together.

Also, a computer in the house may be all that is needed to find out if the aptitude and interest is there. A system, with an entry level graphics program need not cost more than a few hundred dollars, and a use one even cheaper.

Finallay, perhaps her creative outlet will be in the fine arts, producing artwork for direct sales, either at boutiques, art fairs, galleries, or even online. All she need do is produce the works while someone else markets them.

I wish her luck, and I hope the rest of her family will continue to encourage her creativity.

peddle her stuff! get a portfolio together and go to every ad / design and card agency you can find with it

perservere and someone wil pick up on her talent – it will be frustrating hard work but if she has the talent it will win out over time

often they will have a team that can cover the computer skills/production side

Have her simply do what she loves. People have gotten by without computers for years. If she has the talent, she will be just fine.

Can she draw? Can she convey her ideas without a computer? If so then off to work she goes.
