What are the Negatives of getting Home Schooled? What can be the Positives?

Posted by admin on June 17, 2009
Does my parents get to choose how many hours a day I have to study?

I’ve read about Internet courses too, is getting a Tutor better or Computer courses better?

Does my Parents get to choose the courses I want? or do they give me courses I Have to take. Do I have to take Math, History, Physics and even English?

Thank You So Much.

If you are being home schooled your parents are doing a great job just by how mannerly you are.
I only con I can think of about home schooling is the lack of participation between you and other students and teachers as well. But if they are having you be a part of other activities you are probably doing things students in a school don’t get to do.
I guess it depends on how versatile they are with your schedule everyday.
Everyone should know math, history, physics, English to some degree.
Using a tutor is not bad, just means you need a little extra one-on-one attention, shoot we all need that from time-to-time.

Well that depends doesn’t it. Legally it’s up to them so they could insist on a minimum number of hours, but they don’t have to.

A tutor is only going to be expert in a limited field so unless you’re really weak in one area and need one to one tutoring then a computer course is probably a better bet.

Yes, your parents always get the final say. I would hope that they take your opinions into account but until you’re an adult that’s just the way it is. If they want you to do Math, History, Physics and English then yes I’m afraid you rather have to.

If you’re reasonable in your requests, focusing on what you do want to study rather than what you don’t want to they are more likely to be flexible. For example if you have no interest in a career in science and ask to study Spanish and French your parents might be willing to drop the Physics. Math I think you’ll have to do to some level, the same with history. English will be a hard sell to get out of at all, unless it’s literature in which case you could argue that reading books is what matters not picking them to pieces. You could promise to read, say one agreed item of non-fiction per month. Some of the ‘classics’ really aren’t that bad if you don’t have a book report hanging over your head :-)

I’ll leave the general positives (there are lots) and the negatives (none as long as you’re not shut up in a closet all day).

    It really varies.
I’ll just use my own situation to answer your question.

In my case, my parents did not and do not choose how many hours I study. (Although, my dad does like for me to get a good six hours of active work in. Last Wednesday, I spent eleven and a half hours drilling myself on the Paleolithic period.)
However, my parents aren’t the ones teaching me, as yours might be, for all I know. I’m teaching myself, and it’s my own responsibility, not theirs.

As I’m not taking a computer course /or/ using a tutor, well, I can’t quite answer that question.

If your parents want to choose, well, they get to, because they’re your parents. They’re still in charge of you, for now.
If you enroll in a virtual school, though, I’m sure they’d make you take all of the expected courses.
It would be in your best interest to make sure you receive a well-rounded education. You may not enjoy those subjects now.. but learn to. Study them in ways that you like. I personally like to learn from a book; most people find it dull, but it’s how I learn facts best. I pair my English studies with my history, usually — when I focused on long-ago Greek culture, I borrowed The Odyssey and The Iliad from the library. (I still have my eyes on Antigone and Oedipus; I’ve only read shortened versions of them.) Anyway, dabble in everything and excel in everything. I’m involved in physics, world history, writing, linguistics, foreign language, algebra, reading, and art.

Let’s see, the positives and negatives..
Those two sites seem to cover it pretty well.
The biggest con for me is that two of my closest friends can be brats. ;-) They regularly accuse me of “dropping out” and used to exclude me from any school-related activity. In fact, they refused to talk to me for two months after I began to educate myself, and I was sure the relationship was over. It’s steadily improved, though, and the rest of my friends are quite fine with it.

Everyone homeschools a little differently. Here is an explanation of some of the styles of homeschooling.

That being said, some parents go with the 120-150 hours makes a course -rule. You would keep track of the time you spent for a subject and when you meet that, you have finished a one year high school course.

Some parents set a course of study and requirements and when they are met-that is the course credit, no matter how long it takes-short or long.

Each family is different based on their goal for the family and the requirements of their state.

If you homeschool through an online school it is considered independent study and they assign all the work, provide a teacher to oversee your education, and provide textbooks and sometimes a loaner laptop. Here are some free online programs that are reputable.

    Best of Luck!

homeschooling has a lot dealing with what you want to do with your education so you and your parents get to decide what subjects or hours you want to work… its enabled me to do a lot of free thinking too so thats another positive. I would say the cons are that there is not as much social interactions or speech or anything like that but to solve this you just need to spend time with friends maybe get a job really anything that requires some interaction on a daily basis

The point of education is to get one, so yes you are going to have to take certain subjects. Your parents would be complete idiots to let you skip out on English, because you need to be able to read and write. They will probably insist you do maths, history and science too. Your parents will probably insist you accomplish a certain amount each day. Most parents do. Think about it. Do you think your parents ought to let you spend an hour a day studying and the rest playing video games? Do you think it would really be to your benefit to drop English?
There are virtually no negatives with regards to homeschooling that can’t be fixed with a bit of negotiation and creative thought. If your maths program doesn’t suit you, buy a new one that does make sense. If you hate “The Great Gatsby” read something else instead. If physics gives you a headache, study biology. You need to be able to read well, write well, do at least basic maths, think critically and have reasonably good research skills. How you acquire those skills is up to you and your parents. If you can think up a better plan than theirs, they will probably be happy to use yours. Chances are they didn’t like “The Great Gatsby” either. “I don’t want to do this, it sucks” won’t get you nearly as far as “This isn’t working for me, I’d like to do this instead. Here’s the website so you can read some reviews.”
