What computer skills do I need to be an office manager?
Posted by admin on January 18, 2008I have been an office manager for a few years but it’s at a lower-tech business: martial arts schools. So I only have to know Microsoft Office Suite. I’m thinking about applying to be an office manager outside this field in a regular business. What computer programs and skills do I need to have under my belt?

I’m an office manager for a small company, and it’s what I’ve done for the past 9 years or so, with various small to mid size companies. Specific skills vary by industry. Knowing Quickbooks or other basic accounting software is ideal, because the functions within that transfer to other accounting softwares and database management systems. Know how to do a bank reconciliation, understand payables and receivables, and how to read a P&L. Knowledge of a few different types of payroll software is also ideal. Paychex and ADP are the largest outsourcing systems in the country, but basically all payroll systems are pretty similar (with individual quirks of course). Excel is one of the most important programs to know. Being able to import and export from Excel, knowing how to create spreadsheets to provide useful data, even writing basic budget within Excel. It’s important to be organized. Know that sometimes you will do the menial jobs as well as the more challenging. Be flexible, know that you may not be doing the same thing day after day.
