What do people who speak a different language think of the English language?

Posted by admin on March 29, 2009
For example, us English-speakers usually say that French is a romantic, nice sounding language and German is quite harsh. What do people say about the sound of the English language?

As someone whose first language is french and preferred language is spanish, I find english boring.
I do realise the importance of speaking it well though, and the advantage(s) that go along with that.

Boring, too much vocabulary, and irregular verbs.

English is a very poetic language, and if you read some litterature, you realize that there’s much more vocabulary than usualy said. There are some poems I prefer in English, for example “Tonight I can write the saddest lines” by Neruda or “You who never arrived” by Rilke. To those who think English is boring, you should listen to some records of Dylan Thomas reading his poems, it’s really amazing. Anyway, this is my opinion.

I began to learn English as a second language when I was about 9 years old. Back then I thought English was “the coolest language in the world” and I wanted to learn it as fast as possible. I even asked my teacher for extra homework

From what I remember, English sounded quite smooth and elastic. The diphtongs made it sound like you were gliding over the vowels, stretching out the words. Still it wasn’t singy-songy at all, but rather a bit monotonous. It sounded like the kind of language that would be spoken by a “cool guy with sunglasses” if that gives you any idea. Smooth and slick, with a cool edge to it.

Now, when I’ve learned English, it sounds neutral to me. I still think it’s a great language though. English has a much richer vocabulary than Swedish (my native language) and I love to read novels and poems in English. There are many great English expressions which doesn’t sound half as good in Swedish.
