What does the English language sound like to someone who doesn’t understand it?
Posted by admin on May 3, 2008I really want to know what English sounds like to someone who doesn’t understand it. You know when people make fun of German with harsh sounds and french with flowing language I was just wondering what English was like.

Interesting question, it depends on what part of the english speaking word though. If its americans I think foreigners over exaggerate the LA california accent. And for english they just talk posh.

I’ve tried to imagine that myself, and it may not be something you can really imagine, or describe
Having studied and learned to speak french and Spanish to a certain extent,I can switch back and forth between listening to comprehend the words, as I would in English, and listening to hear the sounds of the language. Since it still requires a lot of effort for me to understand those languages, if I just stop “trying” to understand, the language sounds to me like it would to any non speaker
The difference is in learning to associate the sounds with words and concepts; once you are able to automatically associate the sounds you hear with words and concepts, your brain begins to take over tha process, and you no longer really hear how the language sounds, because you’re no longer really listening to the sounds
To hear how English sounds to a non speaker, you would have to try to hear the sounds without connecting them to meaning, so that you’re really just listening to the sound
Not an easy thing to do, but possible, I suppose, if you really really were curious

it sounds as “scrannel” (having bad cold), especially British English…
(btw French sounds as “burry”, not “flowing”)…
