What kind of career should I pursue?

Posted by admin on March 9, 2008
I’m interested in business, journalism, mathematics, teaching, and something in the creative industry like drama. I have no idea what I want to do when I finish school though; I was thinking journalism but I couldn’t handle writing serious issues I prefer to write fiction stories. I think I would get over teaching fairly quickly- the same with business and mathematics. I’m interested in photography as well but I’m not sure if that could be a potential career. I really want to go to university though, and I’m thinking about doing a degree in writing. How hard is it to become a journalist or a script writer?

Newspapers are shutting down almost daily, established ones that have been around for over a hundred years cannot compete and all those journalists are losing their jobs.

Our local paper is gone, today was the last publication of The Seattle P.I. and what one local journalist said about it was that the job never made him rich but he loved doing it. He was very concerned about his ability to find work in a dying industry.

Fiction writers write hundreds of books and many do not reach publication. I talked to one famous science fiction author and he told me to make money in his industry he has to write seven books at once. At the time he said he was working on five books. And this is a very popular established writer of fiction.

Actors and Actresses make bank, but look at the competition you will be facing getting into the business. I am sure there are a ton of these starving.

There was a saying, “Do what you love and money will follow”, I am not too sure about this anymore. Students are graduating out of college and entering the job markets and cannot even get minimum wage jobs. My brother in law has a degree in engineering and has worked as one for about ten years and he is unemployed.

These are the hardest times I have ever seen. My economics professor would preach that the more math you had under the belt the more pay you would make, but now even those math graduates are looking for work.

People are entering the military at 40+ years old because there are no jobs. I am not sure how well Art work is selling these days. I have heard that some galleries are closing.

I would consider going into the medical field. People are growing older and getting sick. With cancer and heart disease being the number two and number one killers in America those fields should provide the best opportunities to put food on the table and a little money socked away for a rainy day.

Why don’t you major in Journalism, and minor in Theatre. During college, write Theatre reviews for the school paper, do an internship at a large paper or other media source, and find a job (print, online, or even TV) in the News upon graduation. note: Just as many online opportunities are opening up for the traditional papers shutting down. It’s a new world, but one where work can be found if you think outside the box. If a school you choose doesn’t have a designated “Journalism” major, major in Comm or English, and make sure to get involved with the school’s paper. (Often smaller schools are better for this, as you can get lost, and not have good opportunities at a bigger University) Or major in Theatre and minor in Journalism. Whichever.

ps. you can write scripts in your free time. Most script writers degrees aren’t in “script writing,” rather Journalism, Comm, and English Literature are popular degrees.
