Where can I learn advanced computer skills?

I want to learn computer skills such as computer security, penetration testing, computer forensics, etc. I was watching a 60 minutes video on the Conficker Virus and the internet security companies that are trying to track the source and I would like to work for a company like that.

You could technically “learn” these things from a private college or technical institution, but a bachelor degree from a uni is much more respected.

Go to school and learn about computers. Learn assembly language. Do lots and lots of reading. Look at 2600 and Haking magazines. Get a Linux system and learn it inside out. Learn Windows inside out. Do more reading. Build yourself a small home network to experiment on. Go back and do more reading.
Lots of people will tell you that 2600 is a magazine for criminals and they’re wrong. 2600 is a great way to stay one stop ahead of what loopholes are being exploited.
Haking magaine is a security magazine that, once you understand what they’re talking about, is a fantastic resource. The current issue had a fantastic basic explanation of the click thru redirection technique that people discovered recently. They also include a disc each month so you’re up on the various techniques that people are trying to use as exploits.
Just make sure you do it on your own systems and don’t start to branch out to other people’s systems – especially without permission.
I’ve heard stories of IT techs being fired for performing testing on company systems that were authorized by managers but ended up being accused of hacking by higher ups. That’s why you always work on your own system. If you mess it up, you’re not hurting anyone but yourself.
Bottom line is you’re up for a lot and lot of reading and experimenting. And whatever you do, don’t for a moment think you’re ever going to stop learning. There’s always something new to learn or to an exploit to fail.
